Benchmarks need boundaries.
U.S. public-company EV/EBITDA benchmarks for positive-EBITDA firms. January 2026 snapshot, not a live feed.
These are public-market sector aggregates, not private-company transaction ranges, lender criteria, or recommended multiples. Size, liquidity, growth, risk, accounting, and transaction structure can differ materially. No automatic private-company discount is applied. Source: Aswath Damodaran, NYU Stern · January 2026 ↗
Make the assumptions visible.
Enter annual EBITDA and your own multiple. The sample 5.0× is an arbitrary teaching assumption, not a sector recommendation.
The value bridge
Enterprise value = EBITDA × your multiple.
Illustrative equity value = enterprise value − debt + excess cash.
EBITDA means earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization. Enter a consistent annual period. Adjustments require evidence; EBITDA is not free cash flow. Equity calculations exclude working capital adjustments, debt-like liabilities, minority interests, fees, taxes, and other deal terms. Excess cash means cash beyond operating needs. The displayed range is a sensitivity exercise, not a confidence interval.

What sits behind the multiple?
Quality of earnings
Consistent reporting, documented adjustments, and a clear distinction between recurring earnings and one-time events.
Revenue durability
Customer concentration, contract terms, retention, and the reliability of future demand.
Operating independence
Management depth, documented processes, and how much the business depends on one owner.
Cash conversion & reinvestment
Working capital needs, capital expenditure, seasonality, and how earnings translate into cash.
These discussion areas do not automatically increase a multiple. No value premium is assigned by this tool.
Bring evidence to the table.
Rate five preparation areas: 0 = not assembled, 1 = partial, 2 = assembled for professional review. Each area contributes up to 20 points. This is a CBC educational checklist, not a validated valuation, credit, or underwriting score.
Start assembling
Unknown items score zero until confirmed. A high score does not mean records are accurate, a business is sale-ready, or financing will be approved.
